Bathroom break

It’s 3:30 in the morning and I just realized that going to the bathroom is a team effort here. A nurse to unhook my IV, someone else to help me out of the CPM machine (the machine which keeps my leg moving constantly) and one who is a specialist in the CPM machine to put me back.

Having done my bathroom duties, here I lay waiting for the specialist to put me back. They lay me on my back in bed and put heel on a pillow to encourage the calf muscles to stretch because thats a very tight area after a TKR. It hurts like a _______. Who knows where that specialist is right now but I’m gonna buzz soon if she doesn’t come quickly.

Just sharing the joys of my hospital stay!

Okay buzzing!

  1. I’m not sure what I’m telling you is any help but remember to always control the pain with your meds .I let the pain rise to an intolerable level because I never liked meds. What a mistake, it took 2 hours to get a control on my pain again and a few shots(needles) I hate needles. You have a great attitude and seem to be progressing nicely, even the little chores we took for granted are difficult. I took so much for granted and now my heart goes out to anyone I see with a disability, I get my butt moving and offer appropriate help, some want no help, other are gracious, ,glad to have a stranger care and understand where they are in the disability. Keep up the good work!! Bear

  2. My curiosity is piqued. How long were you in the hospital? And, you may have said, and I missed it, did you have both knees done at the same time?

    • I had one knee done in 2012 and the other done in 2014. Both times I was in the hospital for 3 nights. I know I had the best care for sure. I’ve heard others only stayed 1 night. I can’t even imagine that!!!

  3. Oh, it is very recent then!!! I am thinking of changing my insurance, which is Kaiser, so I can choose a hospital. Were you at John Muir? Kaiser would never let a person stay for 3 days. I also have a problem with my hand, from all the years making jewelry as a hobby. Also, gardening and cooking are now hard for me. For awhile, I could not even open a carton of milk, so I was thinking I might have to have surgery for that, too. I recently heard of a very good hand specialist, so again, I may want to change my insurance so I have more choice. If you don’t mind, could you tell me the name of the hospital? You could email, so it is not public.

    • Wow I never answered this!! I was at John Muir in Walnut Creek. I have Kaiser now but both knee replacements are done. I can’t imagine coming home soon. That would be really hard!
