Ode to a Back Deck

Yes I couldn’t resist trying to squeeze in a post before our move lol.

We’ve lived here awhile and I’ve always loved looking out our back deck.  We rarely sat out there though.  Despite the compliments I’ve received on my photos from our back deck, you all probably don’t realize that there are many buildings around us and below us.  I frame things quite carefully to exclude the structures in my shots, but I’ve never cloned anything out.

It seemed fitting on this last post from our current location and the very last shot from the back deck that I share with you how through the magic of framing a shot, you can present only what you want the viewers to see.

Will I miss the back deck?  Hmm…probably not.  While I won’t say where we are headed, it’s not very far away and you will certainly see shots from our new back deck!

  4. We all need to “Frame” our view on life right 🙂 Gorgeous image, a fitting way to say good bye.

  5. Nature’s true beauty captured wonderfully.

  6. Very nice picture. I try to frame the buildings and wires out of my deck shots also.

  7. I love this image Laura. An appropriate one to say goodbye with.

  12. Very nice image, and thanks for checking out my blog. Glad you did because I checked your work on Smug Mug and was quite impressed. So I’ll be clicking the “Follow” button on your blog and look forward to seeing future posts.

  13. Ah ! I love this one . Going gaga for the clouds , would say , quite close to the heaven’s door 🙂 😀

  14. Beautiful Pic. Love the contrast in the cloud colours. It looks very dramatic and foreboding.

We don’t have a deck but we have a huge floor-ceiling window in our bedroom that looks over the scrub. If we ever move from our house I will miss our morning view of the sunrise terribly!

  15. You currently have a beautiful view from your back deck and I look forward to seeing new images from your new deck. Excellent and dramatic photograph Laura.

  16. Wonderful composition with multiple interesting features, Laura!

  17. Good luck with your move. We just went through it …. and still going through the unpacking & reorganization. Great pic!

  18. What a lovely photo. It must have been cosy looking out there at the billowing clouds and gathering storm whilst you were safe in your house. 🙂

  19. I like how the shadows frame the composition.

  20. fantastic! Photos of the nature are my passion.Regards,Alois. http://www.aloisabsenger.wordpress.com

  21. I love how there is a flash of light on the trees and the cloud against the dark.

  22. Hello! Thanks for the add! Looking forward to more of your posts! I am new to the community but having alot of fun so far! Cheers!

  23. Wonderful view! Love the last few photos!

  24. Just looked at your site. How long have you been a blogger. In one post you referred to a weekly challenge. what is that?
Thank you for following me. I am following you as well and look forward to learning more about each other.

    • Thanks for the follow. Sorry this is short but I’m moving and will not be here much in the next week.

    • A little more in response to your questions….it’s been crazy here and will hopefully settle down by the end of next week. I’ve been blogging since 2012. The challenge I used to participate in but no longer do. Have a great week and thanks again for checking my blog out. 😉

  25. So, I’ve been scrolling your photos – stunning. I’ll be back!

  26. Checked out and love your work… and writing… this could be the title of an interesting piece about perspective, framing, composition, and change. (And I’m talking about life–not photography.) Thanks for visiting my Brain Leaks and Musings blog… our work has some things in common!

  27. I just found your blog and enjoyed your photos so very much. While viewing your photographs, it seemed to me that we have traveled to many of the same places. I hope all goes well with your move and that the new scenery will bring much inspiration to you.

    • Thank you so much. How nice we have travel destinations in common. Fun to find new people out here in Word Press Land. 🙂 Looking forward to your blog as well.

  28. What a lovely last picture! I wish you the very best in your new home.

  29. It looks almost ominous, yet comfortable; if that makes sense.
I love weather. Especially bad weather, especially stormy weather.
This photo reminds me of growing up in rural east Texas, praying for violent weather.
This time of year, those requests were usually answered.
    Great photo!
    And take care.
Hoping your move goes smoothly. (Moving is a pain).
    Cheers,
    Lance

  30. Absolutely beautiful view

  31. Good luck with the move. Jen [although that is a pretty awesome shot from your back deck]

  32. Fabulous send off picture !
I know what you mean about *clever framing 😉
Best of luck with the move, look forward to those fresh deck shots ….

  33. Good luck with the move. As for me, it is too much trouble to move in the same area just to switch homes.

  34. A stunning view, beautifully composed

  35. I’m a sucker for dramatic light and you captured it here. Wow!

  36. Very wonderful shot–what kind of tools do you use to create these? I’m normally not a huge fan of photography but the compositions and colors you tend to bring out are striking and inspiring.

    • Thank you so much! I used a nikon d7100 and I started off with awesome light in camera. I created three images in photoshop, one high key, one low key and one neutral and layered them and exposed the best of the highs and lows via masking. I then dodged and burned and vignetted all in hopes of creating a painted sort of look. Thank you for asking!

  37. Love these photos. It makes me miss the back deck we had when we lived in Central New York. Not that I’m complaining about the view from our back yard in Florida. 😉 Both offered strikingly different views. Love yours.
