Alaska in Black and White – Monochrome Madness

This week for the Monochrome Madness Challenge I chose to rework a photo from Alaska.  Even at the time I took the picture I thought it might be a good black and white but never converted it, so finally, almost one year later lol….

My husband and I just adored Alaska.  It is so incredibly beautiful there!  We took a helicopter ride and landed on glaciers, rode the ATVs out in the forest and saw bears, and so many other fun things.  One day on a small boat to (I can’t remember where), I saw this boat docked in the water and thought the water looked so beautiful because of the reflections.

The entire challenge can be seen on Leanne Cole’s blog later today by clicking Monochrome Madness.  Please check it out if you get a chance.  Thank you!

  1. I came sooo close to dropping everything a few months ago and moving to Alaska.
    Perhaps I still may.
    Great photo.

Ya know… you’re fueling my wanderlust with this picture.
    Just sayin’

  2. Looks superb in b&w.
    Don’t know thecolor version.
    Helicopter ride….oOo…

  3. My wife and I want to do a cruise there some day. Nice photo!

  4. We must have been in Alaska about the same time. I was in Denali and Kenai Peninsula last August. Mt. McKinley was awe inspiring… it looked like a mirage every time I saw it… and luckily it wasn’t cloud covered when we visited. Alaska is magnificent. Love your photo : )

  5. Love the water and ripples combined with the sense of the weather closing in. Atmospheric. Would love to go to Alaska. So many places…….MM🍀

  6. I love this Laura. The light seems to dance on the water.

  7. Awesome image, Laura!!! Fantastic job! love, Amy

  8. (Oops, left this comment on the photo page – meant to leave it here. Pardon the duplicate!) Laura, love that you captured the cruise ship in the background – great juxtaposition against the trawler. And the mist over the mountains adds another wonderful layer. Glad you “finally” reworked it, as I think it’s lovely in black and white. (I traveled to Alaska last summer – magnificent experience. Next time, I want to make it to Denali…)

    • oh no worries! I wish we could disable commenting on photos now that you mention it…hard to respond via the app on the phone! lol I’m on my computer now, so it’s easy peasy.

  9. Beautiful.

  10. This is a great, the light on the ocean looks like silver.

  11. Great shot Laura; wonderful sense of drama. Checked out your Alaskan Gallery; fantastic! 🙂

  12. Has a timeless quality to it – which would be lost in color..
i do suspect that the color version would have other attributes though.

    • You can see the color one here. I kinda like the color one myself. 🙂 http://lauramacky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Alaska/i-GjGjSnh

      • Thanks for the link…I like the way the color is muted (except the red buoy’s on the gunnel) – the mist/fog in the background is more pronounced than in the B&W version too. As I said, I think each has their own merit depending on what you want to get from the image.

        • Yes I think so too. I need to go out and take some images with B&W in mind. I have one for next week that I did do that with, so we will see what people think. It’s more whimsical.

          • Thanks for your site link – you have some amazing vehicle images – As much as I love vintage cars (I’m a closet petrol head) – I can never quite capture them correctly. I’ll explore more, but I went to this tab first.

          • Petrol head lol!! You would love the Blackhawk Museum! Google it and check it out. Thank you btw. It was the first time I ever photographed cars. It’s a beautiful place! Time for my dental appt now. Maybe I’ll get a shot of the hygienist lol

  13. Laura, the trip sounds amazing and your image is equally fantastic. It looks as though there are also some low hanging clouds on the mountains in the distance. I’d love to see the countryside out there.

  14. great black and white image. your Alaska trip sounds like it was amazing – heading off to see the other image now!

  15. Great image. Has a vintage feeling. I would love to visit Alaska

  16. Alaska sounds wonderful, but isn’t also very cold? I have always wanted to go there, especially after seeing Northern Exposure.

  20. Never been to Alaska and would love to go. I like how the black and white makes the image seem very atmospheric with the low clouds and black water broken by the fishing boat.

  21. Gorgeous shot Laura (oops nearly typed Leanne lol). 🙂

  22. Love the rolling sheen of the water!!

  24. I would so love to go there Laura. Thank you for sharing … lovely b&w pic as usual 🙂

  25. I love that you posted a photograph from Alaska! I miss Alaska so much. My husband and I lived there for 6 years. We lived in the middle of the state, Fairbanks but we traveled to as much of the state as we could. It is a stunning place on so many levels, so dynamic, and the vast expanse of nature is awe inspiring. We have tried to move back on a number of occasions, now having young boys there is much more to consider. But, in our hearts we left a piece of ourselves there. It is too incredible of a place not to dive in and live.
Gorgeous photograph, you captured the water just as it looks, deep, cold and dark. And there are almost always clouds rolling in from somewhere else, ready to change the mood of the day. Ahhh, thanks for the thoughts and visions of my last place I really felt like I was at home.

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed it Carrie! I can imagine how hard it would be to live somewhere else because it’s very unique there. That’s how I feel about the Bay Area even though it’s congested. But it’s unique. I have a whole gallery of Alaska if you’re interested, lol. My photography wasn’t as good last year but if you want to remember home even more……http://lauramacky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Alaska

      • My husband and I just took an LONG three-day road trip with our boys to Arcata, CA (do you know where that is?? Humbolt County) we just got back last night. He has been offered a job there, it is quirky, rural and insanely beautiful. This morning I thought we were not going to move there, hence my post “South, Again.” BUT we have since decided to go for it. It isn’t Alaska but it is way more our pace and offers so many natural settings to enjoy…I am beyond excited. My boys get to be as loud as they want and explore as I did when I was growing up. It isn’t all official yet, but moving more in that direction than ever before. I will totally check out your Alaska photos, I can’t ever get enough of that! Thanks!!

        • I have indeed heard of Arcata! In fact, we are planning a summer drive up to the Avenue of the Giants! You will love it there. Good for you! WHen would this take place?

          • In the next 6 to 8 weeks. He starts work on August 18th! We just drove the Avenue of the Giants yesterday, incredible. We drove 620 miles in one day, each way, then spent a day in Arcata looking at the campus, schools, we couldn’t get our boys out of the community forest (the city of Arcata has a 800 acre park dedicated to preserving 18 trails and 150 yr old redwoods)! We had to go back twice! We are really excited. When is your trip planned for??

          • We aren’t sure when exactly. We just moved ourselves and are still sort of getting organized. We’d like to do it around August sometime because our anniversary is the 16th. 🙂

          • Great anniversary idea 🙂 Ours is the 4th of August. Well, if we get settled before then, I assume we will, maybe we could meet “in person”? Don’t want to make you uncomfortable, totally understand if that feels strange. I have just really enjoyed getting to know you “virtually” and would enjoy meeting you in person too 🙂 We will talk soon!!

          • You never know! You can contact me via my contact link at the top of my blog to discuss further when you know what’s going on. I’d rather continue this in email. 🙂

  26. Very nice processing. Great B&W photo, Laura. 🙂

  27. Great entry for the Monochrome Madness challenge. I really like your composition.

  28. What an adventure a helicopter rode would be and through that! #Gorgeous. Is that fog/ mist in the back round just above the hills?
