No Umbrella Necessary!

The San Francisco Bay Area thankfully has a natural air conditioner called “fog”.  It rolls in most nights into San Francisco off the Pacific Coast, crawls across the bay and even makes its way inland blanketing the area in a natural coolness most nights.  People who haven’t seen this phenomenon might wake up their first morning here and think, “oh, it’s going to rain”!   No rain in the forecast here…..just clear blue skies after the fog parts.

This morning I managed to catch the sun making its way through the fog over the golden hills.  Rule of thumb:  coat on when there is fog, coat off and short sleeves after it parts!  No umbrella necessary.  🙂

  1. What a beautiful picture! We have fog here today too!

  2. Reblogged this on yeseventhistoowillpas.

  3. Thank you for this photo Laura! I so miss the golden California hills and the rolling fog. I love it when it looks like cotton-wool stuck on the hills and the sky is blue above it.

    • Yessss cotton wool!! I love it like that too…in fact, I just jumped up from my chair and took one out our back window that is more like what you describe. A post for another day. 🙂

  4. Beautifully composed with a variety of shades of color!

  5. I was there last weekend and agree…what a difference some fog makes. Just outside San Fran it was sunny and hot. In the bay, cool and windy!

    • Yup! That’s the Bay Area! And even just outside SF (where I am) it’s cool and windy in the morning with fog and then sunny and hot! We are Micro Climate Central here in the Bay Area.

      • oh, no kidding! I have a very good photographer friend who also lives just outside of SF. (www.davidpasillas,com) He showed me around for the weekend. (holy mackrel, I got some incredible shots above the fog my last sunset there…did some shooting at a bunch of beaches in the area, checked out the red woods in big basin…)That really is such a beautiful area. At least, from the perspective of an east coaster like myself. 😉

        • Oh David pasillas! I think we follow each other here or on google+ (I can’t keep them all straight!) I’m glad you enjoyed your time here. I do think it’s one of the prettiest places! If you ever get to the Monterey area….then there’s Pt. Lobos, Big Sur, OMG! And there’s always Lake Tahoe! So many places to see and things to do. Can’t wait to see your shots!

  6. OH, Laura, you captured pure magic again. This image is gorgeous. I love the rolling hills against the clouds. It gives me such a sense of ahhhhhhhh……. Thank YOU, friend! Love, Amy

  7. There is a lot of drama in this photo, great composition Laura.

  8. Gorgeous Laura! I like the rolling nature of the hills and trees coupled with the striking layers of color. And of course, that churning sky just makes it all come together. Beautiful.

  9. Very nice image. Love the layers and depth

  10. Reblogged this on B.E.S.T. Arts Gallery and commented:
    Stunning!

  11. When I was four I lived in San Diego and we sometimes had fog, My paternal uncle lived in San Francisco. Even at four, the fog made an impression. In later years I lived at the joining of three rivers in South Carolina and there was often fog as I drove over the bridges to school. It truly is like Carl Sandburg said,

    FOG
    THE fog comes
on little cat feet.
    It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

  12. love the shadows of clouds on the landscape!! Beautiful Laura!!

  13. Absolute cracker Laura – light and shadow beautifully captured.

  14. Stunning, as always!

  15. Great shot as always. My wife keeps saying she wants to move to another state. With my career choice and my experience level so far, it would make it very easy to just pick up and move almost anywhere. Even another country. As I look at your photos I would consider moving to the SF area as I know I would have tons to photograph. I’m not exactly sure how serious she is but I told her last night that instead of looking for a new house next year, if she really really wants to move to another state, then we should do either the west coast or east coast as I think it would be nice to be close to the ocean. I’m thinking west coast would be better to avoid the hurricanes. I’m pushing more for Oregon or Washington as I like the colder weather, and think I’d be very happy over there. I generally don’t care for rain so much, but I can adjust. 🙂

    • The SF Bay Area has the perfect weather imho. It doesn’t rain too much (although we actually had a drought this year) and it hardly ever rains in the summer. Oregon is lovely BUT..lol…it’s not the bay area! The only thing about this area is that it’s hideously expensive. There are some areas of the bay area that are better than others price wise but if you’re ever serious, let me know and I can give you some pointers. 🙂

      • I’d have to tell you some strict requirements would be a house in the country with 10+ acres plus a smaller city near by that doesn’t have terrible traffic jams during rush hour. Where we live right now isn’t too bad, it’s just expensive trying to find a house with land. I’d also prefer summers to stay in the 80’s for the highs. Ireland and Australia are at the top of my list of places to live due to their weather patterns, but I don’t think my wife could be that far from her family. I’ve already looked for jobs in those areas and I know I could easily get one too. But, moving to another country is quite a bit different than moving to another state. My wife was talking about moving to Ireland a couple months ago but once I looked into the process of being able to buy a house there, she changed her mind.

        • I can’t even leave the bay area let alone another state or country. Visiting yes, living somewhere else, no. lol

          • I have no problems moving. I’ve got nothing that is anchoring me where I live besides my wife and kids. None of my family lives near me and I try to visit them every few years, but part of me just doesn’t care. Most of it has to do with my life as I grew up, but that’s another story. Right now I kind of want to just live somewhere that makes me happy overall. I tend to be drawn to nature and like to hike in the wilderness and from what I’ve seen of Washington and Oregon, I think I’d really like it over there. I think the views are nice in the SF Bay Area, but I think it’d be too populated for my tastes. I’d like to visit a lot of places in CA in general though. Especially the parks. If anything, I will visit parts of CA at some point, and I hope to visit other countries. When it comes down to it though, once you get used to an area, it is hard to leave it sometimes.

          • yup, I’m definitely used to it. This is a huge outdoorsy area but it’s also populated. I love the cultural things like ballet, etc., so we enjoy the combination of things this area has to offer. It’s not for everyone that’s for sure. Oregon and Washington are BEAUTIFUL places!

  16. Hey Laura .. Love the pic and your words! Perfect 🙂

  17. Oh, I love the contrasts between the rolling hills and the ploughed earth 🙂

  18. Great image Laura, love the title, do you think that fits in with the SEO rules on titles though??? 😛
I love hills like that, when my girls were little and we were driving somewhere they would go on about piedols, or something like that, and it took us a long time to realise they meant grassy hills with no trees. They don’t remember it, but we do.

    • lol, umm no, I’m obviously a rule-breaker much to my dismay. I opted for the clever title rather than the SEO rule but I did put a better description on the image title lol. I’m glad my image brought back a fond memory! I’ve never heard of piedols….there are a lot of those around these parts. In the valley where we live there are hills like that on one side and trees on the other.

  19. Great photo Laura; the light is perfect. Early morning or evening shots are always the best. Tres bien 🙂

  20. Wow what a photo… the composition, light everything just perfect… this is what they call picture perfect…

  21. Love the moody light on this shot Laura

  22. love the rolling hills.
