Last night I drove to the town of Benicia, California. Benicia is a tiny town and surprisingly served as the state capital from 1853-1854. (The capitol of California is Sacramento.) Originally I went to get a sunset and while I got some shots, they were not that exciting to me. I really needed my tripod and was too lazy to go back to the car and get it, so I’m posting this instead.
While I was meandering around I met a really nice lady about my age who was also taking pictures. We got to talking and the next thing you know we were sitting having a drink and a bowl of chowder. I really should’ve taken a picture of the blood orange margarita I had…it was quite tasty!

Feels like a Turner background
September 7, 2015 at 4:57 pm
Would it be horrible if I said I didn’t know what you were taking about?
September 8, 2015 at 5:14 am
Joseph Turner, the painter. He captured a lot of brilliant sunsets.
September 8, 2015 at 7:06 am
Well I just googled and I’m humbled! Thank you so much Alex. What an incredible compliment!!

He really is one of my favourite artists. In this post are some sunsets, as well as his talent for covering the seas https://alexraphael.wordpress.com/2014/02/16/gr8at-jmw-turner/

Did you have dinner at The Dead Fish in Crockett?
September 7, 2015 at 2:14 pm
I was in Benicia so we went to Sailor Jack’s. I’ve been to the Dead Fish though before. It’s a cool funky place. I wonder if it’s still there.
September 7, 2015 at 2:18 pm
I swear that pic looks like it was taken from Port Costa directly across from Beniciahhhh as they advertise..
September 7, 2015 at 2:19 pm
Yes Beniciahhhhhh!!! lol
September 7, 2015 at 2:20 pm
That’s what their sign says!
September 7, 2015 at 2:20 pm
What a very interesting and beautiful photo. I really love the lighting, it adds so much to the mood!
September 7, 2015 at 2:29 pm
Thank you so much Claire. The lighting was really pretty last night! I hope to go out tonight or tomorrow night to try and get some sunsets. 🙂
September 7, 2015 at 2:32 pm
Wonderful! I hope you capture some beautiful shots!
September 7, 2015 at 2:37 pm
Me too!
September 7, 2015 at 2:28 pm
No tripod needed, but a second drink is always in order Laura!
September 7, 2015 at 2:29 pm
I wish I’d had time…it was sooo yummy! Cheers!
September 7, 2015 at 2:34 pm
Gorgeous light, Laura. Hope you enjoyed your chowder and new friend!
September 7, 2015 at 2:40 pm
Thank you Jane. I really did. It was fun!
September 7, 2015 at 2:34 pm
The lighting is superb, Laura. The wreckage lends such strength to the softness of the sunset, but at the same time it evokes a sense of decline and fragility.
September 7, 2015 at 4:58 pm
What an insightful comment. Thank you for that and for your support. 🙂
September 7, 2015 at 2:52 pm
A Blood Orange Margarita! Sounds so yummy. Your image is lovely, warm and soft yet telling an intriguing story. Isn’t it incredible when life hands you a friend! Sounds like a lovely way to end a day.
September 7, 2015 at 3:14 pm
Carriee!!!! Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in my stream in ages. I hope you’re doing well. A margarita and a new friend…what more can I ask for?
September 7, 2015 at 3:46 pm
Awe, what a nice hello. I’ve been enjoying the last days of summer with my family and training for a marathon 🙂 I have posted very infrequently…sorry. I did post for the Weekly Photo Challenge this week. Had fun with it! I’ll be back at some point, just trying to keep the balance…the conundrum of life!
September 7, 2015 at 3:49 pm
So glad you’re enjoying your summer and training for a (cough) marathon. Wow! Impressive. 🙂 I’ll have to check out your blog. I’m not in here every day like I used to be so I miss things. You know how the reader is…it only allows for so many “like” clicks. Balance is so important.
September 7, 2015 at 5:12 pm
Oh I do know, haven’t been consistent either! But balance is feeling much nicer than trying to post so often. Great to hear from you 🙂 Love the image today!

Thanks Carrie 😀

September 7, 2015 at 3:26 pm
Nice catch! 😉 Sometimes you can get a good photo without the tripod…
September 7, 2015 at 3:34 pm
Thank you! Yes! I wished I had gotten out for the sunset though. it really needed a tripod for that but I’ll take this one. 🙂
September 7, 2015 at 3:47 pm
This photo is gorgeous, Laura — and I like the friendly story too! 🙂
September 7, 2015 at 3:51 pm

September 7, 2015 at 7:34 pm
Is that another U.S. slang? lol
September 7, 2015 at 7:47 pm
yes & no. we have the word here, but is rarely used.
there is an episode of the Simpsons that has it. https://youtu.be/QDZRjgWgnNM
I love it.
September 7, 2015 at 7:49 pm
Haha. And the waiter says it with a French accent. Showder!
September 7, 2015 at 7:55 pm

I thought you would have a glass of burgundy with her! Do you live anywhere near Carmel-by-the-sea? There is a marvellous photography exhibition there, slated for October
Nice shot!
September 7, 2015 at 10:27 pm
Carmel is about 1-1/2 hours south of here and we love it there and go there frequently! I love burgundy but I do t drink red wine too often because of the histamines. :-(. Thanks about the shot. 🙂

Good morning. Love this picture. I am working on becoming a better photographer. What do you use to watermark your pictures?
September 8, 2015 at 7:03 am
Hello and thank you for your comment. 🙂 I made it in Lightroom under one of my Publish Services. I have the service resize my full-size images to 1000px longest side and at the bottom of the publish service parameters it gives an option to add a watermark or create one. I did it there.
September 8, 2015 at 1:16 pm
amazing image, Laura!
September 9, 2015 at 4:21 am
Love it! Not keen on chowder (the seafood kind anyway), but could probably manage it without much effort looking at this!
Magic!
