We took a trip up to Avenue of the Giants for a couple days and had a wonderful time. Avenue of the Giants is about five hours north of the San Francisco Bay Area in Humboldt County. This world-famous scenic drive is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the 500 mile redwood belt and is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of old growth redwoods in the world! You can read more about the area here.
We stayed two nights and had perfect weather. We explored all the highlights and enjoyed being amongst all the ancient trees. We meandered off the beaten path too and managed to get ourselves lost on some backroad. It was quite the adventure. Let’s just say we really could’ve used a 4WD jeep!
I’ve been having a really hard time getting into the swing of taking pictures and checking in here. My Bad! So in an attempt to try to make a comeback lol…here’s an image of some funny redwood houses I found along the Avenue of the Giants. They really made me smile and I thought they looked kind of cool in black and white.

Wow! Fantastic. Love the processing.
August 19, 2016 at 7:17 pm
Thanks so much George. It deserved something different!
August 19, 2016 at 8:24 pm
Wonderful whimsy! If Peter Jackson had been aware of these, they might have inspired an exception to his filming the Tolkien series strictly in New Zealand!
August 19, 2016 at 8:29 pm
That’s it…whimsy!!! I kept searching for a word and couldn’t find one but that’s it! Thank you. 🙂
August 19, 2016 at 9:20 pm
Definitely like from the Tolkien movies or like something from the Chronicles of Narnia! 🙂
August 20, 2016 at 7:02 am
One of my friends was telling me this last night. Perhaps Bilbo Baggins is on his way home! Thanks Tom. 🙂
August 19, 2016 at 9:59 pm
Fun pics! Avenue of the Giants is an amazing place.
August 20, 2016 at 7:02 am
Thank you Dave. I’m so glad you’ve had a chance to go there. I wish I could’ve spent a longer time!
August 19, 2016 at 10:11 pm
Wow, tnx for the update 👍🏻
August 20, 2016 at 7:03 am
I’m glad I updated you about………what exactly? lol But you’re welcome anyway! 😀
August 19, 2016 at 11:35 pm
welcome back Laura.
August 20, 2016 at 7:03 am
Thanks much Gav. 🙂
August 20, 2016 at 12:47 am
Perfect home for a Giant!
Aren’t they also a football team
August 20, 2016 at 7:03 am
Not on this coast they aren’t! lol
August 20, 2016 at 9:57 am
Hm… There is some team that wears Red Socks, then
August 20, 2016 at 11:40 am
There are the SF Giants but that’s baseball. And them there are the New York Giants football team. Also there’s the Boston Red Socks baseball team. You’re an expert in our sports now LOL!
August 20, 2016 at 11:43 am
Ha! I knew i had read about Giants and Red Socks!
But honestly, i simply do not understand baseball or American football, or why the American footballers need helmets. I played rugby (and kabaddi) as a kid. No protective gear!
August 20, 2016 at 12:18 pm
If you watched American football you’d understand why they wear helmets. I don’t much like it really. It’s gotten SO commercial. I prefer baseball and the pace of it.
August 20, 2016 at 8:03 pm
I have watched a bit on TV, and they keep bumping into each other… That happens in rugby as well…
Nowadays the surfaces are good, but as a young chap, the roughest sport I played was the Indian game of kabaddi. I would end up with skin scraped off my forearms quite often
The commercial game in India is cricket, which I have stopped watching. We have too much of it, at the expense of other sports. And, it has become commercial and corrupt
August 20, 2016 at 9:08 pm
Wow kabaddi sounds rough! I think baseball is similar to Crickett but personally I don’t think baseball is as bad as our football. That has gotten out of control with commercialism. What will it be like a few generations from now? I shudder at the thought.
August 20, 2016 at 9:49 pm
Oh cricket is quite different from baseball! Complex game. We have several versions of the game now.
The classic, the pure version, is a match that lasts 5 days. This can be exciting. International Test Matches last 5 days, and a series can have 5 such games
Then, domestic matches last 3 days
For TV, the shorter versions were devised – the one day version, and then the 3 hour version.
Kabaddi can get rough. Very rough and you need to have excellent cardiovascular fitness

We were in England once visiting our son-in-law and were in a bar during some championship thing. We had no idea what was going on and how important it was but England won it all back then. I guess this must’ve been 10 years ago or maybe 8. I can’t remember lol.
August 21, 2016 at 8:37 am
Ah!! But then, I assume that your daughter is an expert on cricket by now.. I also assume that this is what you were watching! Were the men wearing white pants and shirts?
August 21, 2016 at 9:28 am
Dave’s daughter but she doesn’t like sports haha. Dave and I were in a pub by ourselves for this one, and yes they were wearing white pants and shirts!
August 21, 2016 at 6:39 pm
Yup, that is cricket!!
August 20, 2016 at 1:37 am
Magnificent image Laura. Beautiful tonality and a great subject.
August 20, 2016 at 7:04 am
Thank you so much Simon! They were a fun find for sure.
August 20, 2016 at 1:47 am
You made it even more of a fairy tail.
August 20, 2016 at 7:04 am
Thank you. 🙂 They made me smile when i saw them.
August 20, 2016 at 4:07 am
Either home for a fairy godmother or trio of witches. Very nice.
August 20, 2016 at 7:05 am
I’ll take the fairy godmother please. 😀
August 20, 2016 at 6:46 am
It sounds like an amazing area, complete with an enchanted forest. Terrific shot.
August 20, 2016 at 7:06 am
It is spectacular Belinda! And yes it’s own enchanted forest. 🙂 Thank you. If you are ever both coming down to California, I suggest passing through this amazing place since it’s on Hwy 101.
August 20, 2016 at 10:58 am
I always like finding about new reserves! If we do get back to California we’ll certainly stop by.
August 20, 2016 at 7:02 am
Those are really cool – they somehow remind me a childhood story for some reason
August 20, 2016 at 7:06 am
Me too Nora. Definitely a fairy tale of some sort. Thanks for the comment!
August 20, 2016 at 7:08 am
How the heck do you find the coolest places to visit? I’ve been up there but and never seen those log houses….
August 20, 2016 at 7:12 am
They were by one of the drive-through trees. Those are kind of novelties and we did that as well, but these two little log houses were right near the drive-through tree and no one was there.
August 20, 2016 at 7:15 am
I remember taking my sons there and they stood on this tree trunk laying on it’s side.. 8 feet up and Josh being the youngest was so scared….
August 20, 2016 at 7:58 am
Awwww….
August 20, 2016 at 8:04 am
Looks like something from right out of a fairy tale. How cool!!! Wow!!! Those redwoods are so immense. I remember seeing something somewhere years ago where there was a redwood carved out to let a road pass through and the car on the road looked like a toy. Just amazing!!! Great shot, Laura!! ❤
August 20, 2016 at 8:08 am
I have a picture of one of those too! This one though struck my fancy. Thank you. 🙂
August 20, 2016 at 8:18 am
Dear Laura………………sounds like it was a great trip. Hard to beat when the weather cooperates. I don’t remember seeing those redwood houses when we were up there.
Looking forward to next Saturday.
Love…………..Syl
August 20, 2016 at 9:00 am
Thank you so much! We are looking forward to next week as well.
August 20, 2016 at 8:49 am
Today’s question………How many security cameras does Daryl have around his house?
August 20, 2016 at 5:23 pm
They look wonderful in Black and White.
August 20, 2016 at 5:35 pm
Thank you Terry! I tried it both ways but liked B&W the best.
August 20, 2016 at 9:18 pm
Great little gnome houses, Laura. I love that whole area of Humboldt, try to get up there every few years, a lovely place on earth. 🙂
August 21, 2016 at 7:23 am
Thank you Jet. I built them myself! 😉 Ok so I’m in a weird mood this morning. I’m glad you visit the area often. I think we will be going up more often as well. Such an amazing place so close!
August 21, 2016 at 3:02 am
Wow! Those are so cool! I want one 🙂
August 21, 2016 at 7:26 am

February 28, 2017 at 11:25 am
Amazing photograph! I have just moved to Humboldt county from England and love it so much! Where abouts did you stay while you were up here? 🙂
March 3, 2017 at 10:48 pm
