Expanding Horizons: The Journey

I will always remember the one time I hired a photography tutor when I was still in auto.  We met for only one day and he never mentioned my camera controls, which is what I was hoping for.  Instead he said something that I’ve always remembered:  “Don’t just take a photo because that is just a record.  Express yourself and make art.”

I think about that statement a lot and believe we never really arrive; we are constantly on the journey making adjustments within to express a more complete self.   Along life’s journey, I’ve noticed it seems a lot of the time we get what we need but not always what we want.  It’s up to us to see the big picture and to realize that even a step back can ultimately be a step forward.

It’s not how big your steps are or how fast they are…it’s about taking the step in the first place, appreciating the meaningful things along the way, and never ever giving up!  That’s my path in photography and life!

I love this quote by Dewitt Jones:  “Our deepest inspirations come from not looking to others but from looking within”.

Home is Where the Heart Is!

For the last 2-1/2 months, we’ve been under a major remodel and have been living somewhere else.  This past weekend we moved home and I can’t tell you how nice it is to be back home!  I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished, although the kitchen is not quite done.  You’ll see some missing cabinets and light bulbs, window treatments, etc.  This will all be completed soon, but we wanted to come home as soon as it was habitable.

The picture of our new kitchen was taken with my D750 using my 24-120mm lens (I love that lens!).  I tone-mapped it in Nik HDR and then added some sharpening.

The “before” was taken with my iPhone.  You can see where the space was originally enclosed and much smaller.  We opened it up and moved the fireplace to a corner in the living room.  Dave is a happy camper in the kitchen last night cooking our first meal which was chicken piccata…it was yummy!

California’s Devastating Fires!!

The fires in California are absolutely devastating!  I’m posting this to ask you for your prayers.  Many I know have evacuated the foothills of California and the fire is zero percent contained there.  It’s been horribly hot, terribly dry due to a severe drought, and the fire is jumping all over the place.  There are evacuation centers set up for those who’ve lost their homes and many people who live near the areas are going there to drop off food, clothing and whatever else is needed.

I live near Mt. Diablo which is about 30 minutes east of San Francisco and about 2.5 hours south of the devastation.  I am pretty much at the base of Mt. Diablo and I couod barely see it due to the smoke. There was even ash on our car and on the tables at the local coffee shop this morning.

I know this is not photography-related but I would sincerely appreciate your positive thoughts or a reflective moment for the devastation this has caused.  Let’s hope the fire gets under control soon.
