A Bit of Oakland History

Yesterday my husband and I were at our favorite Mexican restaurant in Oakland, and of course I had to take a few pictures while we were out.   The unusual shaped building was built in the 1880’s and housed the Maclise Drug Store.  During the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, it suffered significant damage.  it was seismically retrofitted and is now the home of a law office.

When the building was built, it wasn’t tiny, it was huge: instead of looking small compared to everything else, everything around it looked very small.

On February 20, 1979 the Maclise Drug Store Building (spelling as per the City of Oakland) was designated the 25th Oakland landmark.  The building is also listed as one of California’s historical places.
