The dawn of the unslept

I don’t know how many of you out there have insomnia, but it is one beast!  I’ve had it all my life.  Even as a child I can remember having a hard time falling asleep, but lately OMG…it’s been bad.  It’s definitely not the knee replacement, because it’s been feeling very good lately.  Oh yeah, my knee replacement!  Isn’t that why I started this whole blog in the first place?  😉

Who knows why this is going on but the last few days I’ve been running on very little sleep and last night I only got two hours.  I’m a bit cross-eyed looking at this screen; but not too much to say that I’m thankful I’m here, and I’m looking forward to our upcoming Alaska trip in one week!

I used to spend an inordinate amount of time in front of the computer not accomplishing anything at all, but now I’m out living life, enjoying my husband, making new friends, and reacquainting myself with old ones….WOW what a difference!

The Proof is in the Pudding!

We couldn’t be having a more beautiful day here in the bay area!  There is nothing more motivating to me than sunshine….and my camera case which is sitting nearby.  🙂    Today I’m going to take the plunge!  I sweetly asked my husband if we could take a short drive today, camera in tow.  Boy I miss getting out there!

Yesterday’s PT appointment went really well.  I hopped on the table awaiting that heated huge pad which they lay on top of my leg to straighten it, and even before the pad was set down on top, I noticed that my leg was so much straighter!  It was infinitely easier for me to “get through” the ten minutes while the pad is on top of my leg.  In fact, only the last 45 seconds were getting uncomfortable.  Hurray!  I can feel all those muscles that have been driving me crazy trying to relax.

Jim increased the resistance bands on almost all my exercises.  I started with no bands actually, and in some exercises I’ve graduated into the easiest resistance band and in some I’ve gotten up to the green band which is the third hardest.  I’m definitely getting stronger, no doubt about that.

The bending of my leg once again was the part that I enjoyed so much.  *groan*   He really isn’t overly aggressive at all, so don’t misunderstand me.  But he does push me just a little and for me, I think that’s what I need.  The reassurance of all this comes not just from faith in what I’m doing, but the proof is in the pudding!  After Jim increased my flexion, I stood up and O-M-G!!!  The relief was amazing!  I felt like I had a semi-normal leg!   That feeling lasted fairly well and hopefully will start getting to the point where I feel like that more and more.  I can totally tell that increased ROM for me is a must.   It’s one thing to have faith inside yourself, to believe that you’re doing the right thing.  It’s another to actually see that come to fruition.  Can you tell I’m excited?   🙂

I got home after PT, elevated and iced for the rest of the day and did a few stretching exercises.

The Next Phase….

I had my three month post-op checkup with my surgeon yesterday.  I must say, he really is the nicest, most caring man!  He’s been my knee doctor for years and has done  surgery on it before, so he knows me pretty well.  I know you’re dying to know what happened so….

He examined my knee, feeling the scar tissue commenting on that it looked good.  He mentioned that my ROM is currently at functionality but he’d like to see if the PT can increase my flexion.  Functionality lets me climb stairs, get dressed, drive, etc., but it doesn’t allow for that extra flexiblity so you don’t notice you have so much of a limitation.   I was explaining to my doctor that Jim, my PT, had gotten my leg to 125 but that was with him doing it.  That’s very good news though because it means the possibility is there!   My straightening was good and he said that some people never get to zero degree extension in their daily lives because it’s just the way their bodies are built, but he wants to see if I can get a little bit more.  Thankfully, he gave me 8 more PT visits.  🙂

I asked him about the swelling and he said that can take 6 months to a year to completely subside in some people…probably meaning ME people!  haha    Let’s just say that I won’t be wearing shorts anytime soon!

My knee is also less “hot”.  Heat means that the blood is flowing trying to heal the area, and the fact that it’s less hot means it’s getting better.

So as you can see, I’m embarking on the next chapter!  My next checkup with the surgeon is in two months, and I can’t wait to see how much I’ve improved by then!
