Spooktakular Challenge!

BOO!!!    Scared yet?    Okay so that wasn’t my best scary voice.  😛

The image below is part of Eddie Mooney’s Spooktakular Challenge in honor of “All Saints Eve” or “Halloween”.  This image is from a series I took at a local cemetery in Oakland, California with my camera club a few weeks ago.  Can you believe this incredible crypt?   I’m amazed that people spend so much money on a place to be buried.

The image was lightly processed in Lightroom only.  I was lucky to be there at the right time for the light to be casting such an ominous shadow over the building.  BWAHAHAHA!

If you get a chance, check out Eddie’s blog here for all the Spooktakular images!

Happy Halloween everyone!

Millionaires Row

Another one from Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.

It’s kind of hard to believe that the nickname for this row of crypts is “Millionaires Row” but it really is.  Who says you can’t take it with you when you pass on!

Creating a Mood

It was very spooky at the Mountain View Cemetery a few days ago.  It was as if I could feel the spirits reaching for me through the grass as I tip-toed over their graves moving from one area to the next.  The crunching of the fall leaves on the ground provided the perfect sound backdrop to such a quiet place and built up frightening anticipation as to what was to come.  BWHAHAHAHA!

Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration.  The sun was out, people were jogging and some people were even having picnics next to crypts!  I kid you not!   While that alone is an interesting juxtaposition, it’s not what I was going for that day.  I really wanted a moody Halloween image.

In this image, the light and texture of the crypt, staircase, clouds, grass and foliage in the foreground really spoke to me.  Even though it was pretty in color, I converted it to an “almost” black and white with some other “scary techniques” thrown in.  I was scared just doing it!  😉
