One Photo Focus – May 2016 (original + my edit)

For those of you who don’t know this challenge, it consists of everyone editing the same photo taken by one person.  Below you’ll find my image as well as the original image provided by Julie Powell.  Thanks to Julie in more ways than one.  Not only did she provide this month’s image but I’m using her techniques for distortion she shared with us a few weeks ago plus an additional three of my own effects at the bottom of the list below.

Please check out Stacy’s blog when you have time to see everyone’s submissions.  It’s always fun to see everyone’s edits!

Process:

  • Opened image in Photoshop and applied a different color palette via Topaz Restyle
  • On the same layer select  Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint, mode to “Medium Lines” then click ok
  • On same layer select Filter > Blur > Radial Blur with amount 100, Blur Method zoom, Quality best, then click ok
  • Repeated the radial blur 4 times
  • Create duplicate layer
  • On original layer, and select > Filter > Distort > Twirl > 200
  • On duplicate layer select > Filter > Distort > Twirl > -100 and change Blending Mode to Luminosity
  • Applied Gradient Map to the top layer for more color (naturally lol), reduced opacity & fill, and blending Mode to Multiply
  • Applied Emboss Layer to give the image depth
  • Applied blurring to edges and kept detail around the heart shape.

Well that was fun!

One Photo Focus – April 2016

For those of you who don’t know this challenge, it consists of everyone editing the same photo taken by one person.  Below you’ll find my image as well as the original image provided by Cee Neuner.  Thanks much to Cee for the original image.  I really loved working on it!  Please do check out Stacy’s blog when you have time to see everyone’s submissions.  It’s always fun to see everyone’s edits!

Basic Process:

  • Used Lightroom to make basic adjustments to balance out light and shadows
  • Removed Power pole and lines using healing brush in photoshop
  • Added curve to sky
  • Added a tree using a tree brush in the background to cover up vacancy left by the bottom of the pole
  • Added a tractor
  • Used Macphun Filter calm day at a reduced opacity to get the general tone
  • Used Topaz Glow for detail in some areas like the flowers around the barn, the grass and the wood
  • Used Topaz Impression very lightly to make it look more painterly
  • Added a little bit of light in the sky right above the tractor
  • Adjusted colors using layers in Photoshop

One Photo Focus – March 2016

For those of you who don’t know this challenge, it consists of everyone editing the same photo taken by one person.  Below you’ll find my image as well as the original image provided by Nancy Merrill.  Thanks much to Nancy for this image!  Please do check out Stacy’s blog when you have time to see everyone’s submissions.  It’s always fun to see everyone’s edits!

Lately I’ve seen a lot of photos superimposed on car sideview mirrors, so I thought I’d go with it.  I happened to have a photo taken on my iPhone while sitting in my car, but with cherry trees in the mirror, so I superimposed Nancy’s photo into the mirror.

Basic Process (it’s so simple it’s embarrassing):

  • Opened my iPhone photo in Photoshop.
  • Masked out the image in the mirror where the cherry trees were.
  • Added a layer underneath containing Nancy’s image.
  • Added some colorization on the entire thing via Nik Color Efex.
  • Voila!
