Yesterday I received my new Nikon SB-700 flash and am having fun learning! This is my very first flash photo and I’m excited about delving into a whole new area of photography. And um yes, I did photoshop it just a little bit but nothing that affects the basic light.
My setup is a little popup white studio with a black cloth inside. The flash was set up outside the photo studio to the right of the flower. It’s a meshy material so the flash is diffused. I then also used a bit of flash on my camera to fill in the shadows. I’m looking forward to learning more and more so that I can get creative.

A new world awaits! You will never go back to an on-camera flash again…
May 5, 2015 at 12:40 pm
It does Robert! I’m excited! I never even used my on-camera flash before. So I’m a true newbie.
May 5, 2015 at 11:25 am
Lovely shot Laura…..like you I’ve done very little with flash, but it’s definitely one of those areas that I need to learn more about.
May 5, 2015 at 12:41 pm
Thanks so much Mark…I’m glad you like it. It was daunting getting the flash knowing zero about it. I could barely turn it on lol.
May 5, 2015 at 12:01 pm
Very nice image, Laura. The diffused light really worked. I agree with Infaredrobert, but be careful. Before you know it, you’ll be looking at adding wireless sync units, softboxes, light stands, and power packs.;-)
May 5, 2015 at 12:42 pm
Thanks so much Robin. And yes..oh dear on the equipment. I’ve already realized I need a light stand lol. It’d’ be nice to have another flash too someday. I’m going to be shooting my daughter’s chocolates for her business in about six months so that’s why all of this started. Hopefully by then I’ll know what I’m doing.

Nice. I have used strobes before. It opens up lots of possibilities
May 5, 2015 at 8:39 pm
Thank you. I’ve been reading up on all this and you’re right…there are so many possibilities it makes my head spin! I’m kinda liking the hard light images. I’d love to see some of your photos sometime.

I have not taken a photograph with strobes in a while. I am looking to buy soon. Will post when I do. Have fun learning

May 6, 2015 at 7:28 am
Thank you Pieter. Lots to learn but I have to start somewhere.:)
May 6, 2015 at 12:32 pm
so what do you think about the flash? I am also thinking of buying exactly the same model…
May 6, 2015 at 2:24 pm
I really love the flash. I tried a friend’s SB-800 (discontinued) and the SB-600 but the menu on the SB-700 is infinitely better. I’m in my infancy with all this but from what I’ve read and experienced, I like this one better.

Spectacular, Laura! I’m just looking into getting a Nikon flash for my camera in the next month or so. I keep hearing the SB-900 for my not so new Nikon is a great performer. Really like how this turned out.Sure you’ll be a pro at it in no time!

Thank you K’lee! I think it’s the 910? I’m not sure though. I must admit it’s kinda fun! I plan on delving into it a bit more in the next few days. Thank you SO much for your support! 😀

Wonderful. Much better than my current initial foray into the world of flash/studio photography. Thanks for sharing.
May 13, 2015 at 8:37 am
You’re welcome! Except there is no flash here. This was taken outside and I photoshopped it. 🙂
May 16, 2015 at 3:46 am
Playing with flash is a lot of fun. There’s a mounted flash on my new camera, but it’s possible to turn the flash so that you can bounce the light of reflectors/walls/ceilings. I’ll definitely be experimenting a lot more with flash from now on. I’ve also ordered an external flash that can be fired off camera. I like the result of your experiment!
May 16, 2015 at 6:51 am
Yes! My flash was mounted on a little foot that came with it off to the side. Thanks for the props on my result. I haven’t done any since. I’ve been working on this store.
I will be done with it today though so then back to photography! Yay! Thanks for your comments. 🙂
